Single Neede tattoos. Detailed, created one line at a time

Single needle tattooing is all about precision. Using an extremely fine needle configuration, this technique makes it possible to create delicate lines, subtle details and refined designs with an almost hand-drawn quality.

At Elmar Tattoo in Amsterdam, I use single needle techniques to create custom tattoos that feel personal, balanced and carefully considered. From small symbolic pieces to detailed botanical, illustrative or minimalist designs, every tattoo is created specifically for you.

No templates. No rushed appointments. Just your idea, carefully translated into a tattoo designed to complement your body and stand the test of time.

What is a single needle tattoo?

Single needle tattooing is a technique in which extremely fine needle configurations are used to create precise lines and delicate details.

It is closely associated with fine line tattooing, but the two terms aren’t exactly interchangeable. Fine line describes the visual style of a tattoo, while single needle refers more specifically to the technique used to create exceptionally delicate details.

This makes single needle particularly suitable for designs where subtlety and precision matter.

Think botanical details, small animals, meaningful symbols, elegant lettering, architectural elements or intricate illustrations.

The result can feel less like a conventional tattoo and more like a carefully drawn illustration on the skin.

Single needle vs. fine line tattoos

This is one of the questions I hear most often.

Are fine line and single needle tattoos the same thing?

Not quite.

Fine line is a broader tattoo style characterised by thin, delicate lines. A fine line tattoo can be created using different needle configurations depending on the design.

Single needle tattooing is a specific technique that allows an artist to create extremely fine details.

In practice, the two often overlap.

I don’t believe the needle should dictate the design. The technique should serve the tattoo. Depending on your idea, placement and skin, I choose the approach that I believe will give you the best result — both when the tattoo is fresh and as it ages.

Why choose single needle?

There is something beautifully understated about a tattoo that doesn’t need to shout to be noticed.

Single needle tattoos can be incredibly detailed while still feeling light and elegant. They work especially well for people who want something personal and sophisticated without the visual weight of heavy outlines.

But simplicity can be deceptive.

When you’re working with very delicate lines, tiny differences matter. The angle of a curve, the spacing between details and even a fraction of a millimetre can change the balance of a design.

That’s why I never approach single needle tattooing as simply “making the lines thinner.”

The goal is to create a composition that works as a tattoo.

Precision without sacrificing longevity

A beautiful tattoo shouldn’t only look good in the photograph taken immediately after your appointment.

It needs to work on living skin.

Skin moves. It changes. Ink naturally settles over time.

For that reason, I look carefully at line spacing, size, placement and the amount of detail in every design. If an idea contains details that I believe are too small to age well, I’ll tell you.

Sometimes making a design slightly larger or simplifying one small element can make an enormous difference to the final result.

I would rather give you honest advice before tattooing than create something that only works for an Instagram photo.

The goal is simple: a delicate tattoo designed with the future in mind.

Custom single needle tattoo designs

Every tattoo I create begins with a conversation.

You don’t need to arrive with a finished design.

You might have a photograph, a rough sketch, several reference images or simply an idea you haven’t quite figured out how to translate into a tattoo.

That’s enough.

We’ll look at what matters to you, what visual direction you like and where you would like the tattoo to sit.

From there, I create a custom design specifically for you.

Your references are inspiration — not something to copy.

The finished tattoo should feel like yours.

Single needle tattoo ideas

Single needle is particularly suited to designs where subtle details are an important part of the artwork.

Popular ideas include:

● Botanical and floral tattoos

● Animals and pet-inspired designs

● Small portraits and illustrative pieces

● Handwriting and delicate lettering

● Architecture and travel-inspired tattoos

● Stars and celestial designs

● Minimalist symbols

● Geometric details

● Meaningful objects and personal memories

● Small custom illustrations

But these are starting points, not a catalogue.

Some of my favourite tattoos begin with an idea that doesn’t fit neatly into a category.

Choosing the right placement

Placement can completely change how a delicate tattoo feels.

A design that works beautifully on a forearm may need different proportions when placed on a wrist, ankle or rib.

Popular placements for single needle tattoos include the forearm, upper arm, wrist, ankle, shoulder, ribs and collarbone.

But popularity isn’t how I decide what works.

During the design process, we’ll consider the shape of your body, movement of the skin, visibility and how much space the design needs.

If I think another size or placement would work better, I’ll explain why.

Ultimately, the decision is yours — my job is to give you the information you need to make it confidently.

Your appointment at Elmar Tattoo

Getting tattooed should feel personal, not like being moved through a production line.

Your appointment gives us time to look at the design together and make final decisions about size and placement.

Nothing starts until you’re comfortable.

Once everything feels right, we begin tattooing.

Afterwards, I’ll explain how to take care of your new tattoo during healing and what you can expect over the following days and weeks.

And if you’re unsure about something while it’s healing, you can always get in touch.

A quiet, personal tattoo experience in Amsterdam

For some people, walking into a tattoo studio for the first time can feel intimidating.

It doesn’t need to.

I want the experience surrounding your tattoo to receive the same attention as the tattoo itself.

Questions are welcome. Changing your mind about placement is fine. Taking another few minutes to look in the mirror is fine.

There is no prize for making the process faster.

There is only one result that matters: leaving with something that feels right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do single needle tattoos fade faster?

Not necessarily. Every tattoo changes gradually as the skin ages, and very delicate tattoos can naturally soften over time.

How a tattoo ages depends on several factors, including the design, technique, placement, your skin and how well you protect it from the sun.

This is one reason I consider longevity during the design process rather than simply trying to make every detail as small as technically possible.

Are single needle tattoos the same as fine line tattoos?

No, although there is significant overlap.

Fine line generally describes an aesthetic based around delicate lines, while single needle refers more specifically to a tattooing technique.

A tattoo can therefore have a fine line appearance without every part necessarily being tattooed using a single needle.

Do single needle tattoos hurt less?

Not automatically.

Tattoo pain varies considerably between people, and placement usually makes a bigger difference than whether a design is single needle or fine line.

Many clients find smaller delicate tattoos very manageable, but everyone’s experience is different.

Are single needle tattoos suitable for a first tattoo?

Absolutely.

Their subtle appearance makes them particularly popular with first-time clients.

If this is your first tattoo, I’ll talk you through the process so you know what to expect before we begin.

How small can a single needle tattoo be?

Single needle techniques can create incredibly small details, but “possible” and “advisable” aren’t always the same thing.

A tattoo needs enough space for the design to remain readable as it heals and ages.

If your idea is too detailed for the size you have in mind, I’ll recommend adjusting the size or simplifying certain elements.

How  much does a single needle tattoo cost in Amsterdam?

The price depends on the size, complexity, placement and time required to create and tattoo your design.

Because my work is custom, it’s difficult to give one meaningful price for every single needle tattoo.

Once I know more about your idea, I can give you a clearer indication of what to expect.

Can you copy a tattoo I found online?

I prefer not to copy another artist’s work.

Reference images are very useful for showing me the style, composition or details you like. I can then use those ideas as a starting point to create something original for you.

Your tattoo should belong to you.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

a good night’s sleep, eat properly beforehand and stay hydrated.

Avoid arriving on an empty stomach, and wear comfortable clothing that makes the tattoo area easy to access.

You’ll receive any additional information you need before your appointment.

Do you handle A minimum age?

Yes, minimum age is 18 years.
